Winter Flood

We've been there during the gaming drought. We craved for new games to come out. We were left with nothing more than a few games for summer. The holidays sucked back then. Now, the Gaming Industry is paying us back with more games than we can handle. Winter is flooded. This holiday rocks! Goodbye social life!

Well not entirely. I have to thank the PSP for allowing me to enjoy my social life as well as my gaming at the same time. What games? I've got a number of them. And below I'll list down the games I've played and a brief description of my experience with them.

PlayStation 2:

Dragon Quest VIII: The Quest of the Cursed King :
Final Fantasy XII too far off for you? Kingdom Hearts II is only out in Japan? Try DQVIII - the long awaited RPG from Enix (now under SquareEnix). This is a heck of a very long RPG but great nonetheless. It has this classic feel to it yet at the same time rather modern.

WWE Smackdown! VS Raw 2006:
I've never enjoyed a wrestling game as much as this after the disappointment I got from the last one. Season mode is great but rather short. You get more things to do with more goals given to you. You get to synchronise with your PSP version. And best of all, the CAW mode's massive improvements. Extremely great replay value. One new additions to the WWE series is the General Manager Mode, which also offers a 2-player mode. I had fun with it.

Xbox:

Battlefield: Modern Combat :
If you loved battlefield on the PC, then you'll love this great addition to the console as well. Modern vehicles, modern weapons, great maps and objectives. You won't get lost easily with what you need to do as well.

Burnout Revenge:
Do I even have to say anything more about this game? With Burnout 3 breaking new grounds in arcade racers, burnout revenge takes it even further with new techniques, better graphics and still faster than ever. You don't get a racing game as addicting as Burnout Revenge.

Call of Duty 2: Big Red One :
You're looking for a World War shooter and not modern combat? This game is for you. First few hours through this game, it's hard for me to put down the controller. The campaign mode gives something that no other World War shooter currently can - a great story while actually getting to know your comrades int the Big Red One. This is my first person shooter of the year.

Need for Speed: Most Wanted :
Great graphics. Great physics. Great cars. And you are wanted by the Police. Make it to the top blacklist in street racing and be known as a legend. No more driving at night like the Underground series. Most Wanted takes you cruising through a city dusk till dawn.

Peter Jackson's King Kong The Official Game of The Movie:
Great game based on survival skills. Not a normal 1st person shooter/adventure. You get limited ammos throughout the game and you depend mostly on spears or bones lying around to survive. Great replay value for me. I played it over and over again for unlockables.

Prince of Persia: The Two Thrones:
I'm 90% over this game and this is a great come back from the annoying Warrior Within. Great puzzles, great action, and a memorable story.

PlayStation Portable:

Grand Theft Auto Liberty City Stories :
If you are afraid that GTA won't translate well on the PSP, then fear not - this is a great game. Nothing beats GTA: SA though but still, this is GTA portable, MAFIA style. Who wouldn't want to jack cars while you are actually outside the home?

Infected :
Very addicting somehow. A great arcade shooter for the PSP. I bring this game everywhere I go so I can just shoot zombies endlessly while chaining great combos. Lock-on works perfectly on this, something I've been annoyed with 3rd person shooters on the PSP. GTA might learn a thing or two from this game. Play online as well to spread your virus (via avatar) to other players around the world and see as your virus infects other players! Oh and the soundtracks rock!

SOCOM:Fire Team Bravo :
Yet another great 3rd person shooter on the PSP. This has an addicting online mutiplayer game. And via mic, you can voice chat for a much better game strategy. I've talked about this a lot the past month and guys, if you are into shooters like this, get it - and let me know =)

With the PSP getting more games than just racing, and 3rd Person shooters proving to be great on it than just racers, I am in on a great holiday so far. I've still got more games to play before January comes - I hope to finish everything by then.

The evolution of Gaming Platforms

I have been playing a heck of a lot of games for the past few weeks since I last posted anything here. And for every game I've played, none were on the PC. Unfortunately (well depending on how you see it), I haven't been playing games on a PC for yonks. My Command and Conquer days are over for over a year now. First person shooters are getting better and beginning to feel incredible on consoles. And with the PSP now getting more great games, handhelds are a great way of playing good games while breathing fresh air at cafes or just relaxing at the beach - heck playing games online wirelessly on handhelds are no longer a thing of the future. With games like SOCOM on the PSP, planning strategies via voice-chat works flawlessly. Just expect people to stare at you every now and then if you're playing at a cafe.

I used to be a PC-gamer first, console-gamer 2nd and handheld last. But these days, handheld seems to be closer due to the fact that I can play my games outside the house despite graphics being inferior to consoles. PCs atlast I can't say much. With the 360, the statement that says PCs are superior to consoles is at last a thing of the past. Consoles just make life so much easier for gamers. No more graphics configurations. No more crashing back to windows. No more looking at the PC requirements. No more upgrading. And the best part? Playing games on high-resolution HD-TV. Can't find the 360 you want? Singapore has some, priced atleast between 800-850 for the core edition. Next-gen is here.

The Time to Vote

The year is coming to an end, and that means it is that time of the month where people vote for the best of things of 2005. And that includes the gaming industry. I know my game of the year but I'll put my list up once I've played most of the games I've bought. But that is me. What about you and everyone else in this world? You wanna vote? Here's one place you can do so, best of 2005 at 1up.com. My all time favourite gaming site.

Now go and vote for your game of the year!

Heaven for RPG Fans

I am currently playing Dragon Quest VIII at home on the PS2 while playing GTA (PSP) whenever I'm outside the home (and occasionally Burnout and SOCOM come in between). DQVIII is great so far. It feels like a traditional RPG in a 3D environment. The environment feels a bit outdated when you start comparing it to the likes of games like FF latest series, Fable or Romancing Saga of the current gen. Still, thank god the traditional feeling is a good thing.

I'm still not finished with DQ yet though. I'm not even sure if I'm half way through. Even at this stage, I'm loving the game. It will surely be one of those games I will look back in the future like I do with Final Fantasies and Kingdom Heart.

With a heck of a lot of RPGs coming lately, DQVIII stands out the most as of yet. This final quarter of 2005 is raining RPG. Shining Force Neo, Romancing Saga, The Legend of Heroes and Wild Arms are to name the others. Then there's Kingdom Heart II which I want to get my hands on now.

Next-Gen is Here

I envy those bastards over at the states, buying or hav bought them 360 consoles. Oh when is this land called the abode of peace will get up to that level? I'm longing for heaven when all I get are whispers of excitement from those who are already there. When is it my turn? When will I be able to stretch my arms and start fragging jackasses online from my TV, next-gen style? For the love of God, please lend me a few hundred bucks so I can get my own! Next-generation is here, let me be part of it!!

Video Game Awards 2005

I never liked the Video Game Awards. Most of the nominees that gets pick just don't deserve to be nominated. Plus, to have a video game awards and having the fans vote it is just plain ridiculous. Movie and music awards are fine because it is easy for the audience to get to them since movie tickets are cheap and music can be listened to for free on the radio if not bought. Video games are expensive, and to truly appreciate a game, you need to play through the whole thing (unless it is bad, then it wouldn't make it as a nominee). Video games take hours or days to finish and find out how great it can be. One game doesn't mean that everyone played it but rather sometimes only a few can appreciate it. But then, these are just my opinion.

Putting that aside, I must say that this year's VGA isn't too bad. At least the nominees are decent, although I have to say that some don't even deserve to be in. Also, some awards just sound stupid - like 'Best Cyber Vixen of the Year' and... oh okay, so that's the only one that I can put a finger on. But then again, this award can lead to more better looking cyber vixens... interesting...

Anyway, I'll lay out the results of VGA below. Here are some games worth mentioning though. Props to RE4 for being the best game of the year. I couldn't agree more. Katamari also ran with an award. I'm happy for that. Burnout left with an award and so did the PSP. But one thing is missing, Shadow of the Colossus. They should have something like Best Artistic Game Award or something... too bad.

Another Night, Another Round of SOCOM

Just ended another round of SOCOM with my bro who's all the way in Scotland. We started off earlier with a series of 1vs1 game. Took awhile, but felt really intense coz you were just sitting there, anticipating some movements at a distant, expecting your opponent to popup around the corner, throwing grenades just to distract or attract your opponent. At one time, I was getting ready with a grenade, I saw him coming out of a door way, I pressed the grenade button, accidentally released it, the grenade hit a wall, bounced back at me, BOOM! Instant suicide. Then, I was camping at one corner, waiting for him. Went to my laptop to send a thrash talk message to him on skype. Then next thing I knew, I was shot dead. God, 1vs1 sure hell is f'n crazy.

Note to self, don't look at something else while online game is in progress. =p

After the 1vs1 - we came back and joined a ranking game. It started off with a few people and later on, more joined - until it was an 8vs8 match. Some people had mics, and man was it easier to plan strategies with each other. Me? I was only able to listen. Since I can't plan anything, I just followed or planned my own route. Then again, staying in a group is a good strategy.

Tonight was both good and bad for me. Bad? Coz my first time suicide has officially arrived. And it wasn't just a one time suicide. I had three more after that. Bloody RPG + Free look hit the floor when I fired... okay that was kinda my fault. That led to me making a fool out of myself, AND dragging down my rank. Good? Coz I fragged a lot of asses. And won a match for my team. Oh yeah, my first rank game that I, as the only survivor, won for the team. I was a hero... oh my bro almost became one ... then he got fragged on a 1vs1 finale. He left me a msg saying... "I was gonna be the hero" Hahaha!

God bless the PSP. Goodnight everyone. Oh wait, I mean, Good morning.

*Victory dance*

New Layout

Spent some time tonight editing a new layout. And I'm done now. Right, back to SOCOM.

SOCOM Online

Online Play Heaven at last! God knows how long I've been craving to go online to play again. Ever since my xbox live's been banned, life has lost its touch... well okay not really. But hell, SOCOM: US Navy SEALs Fireteam Bravo for the PSP took my breath away Online! At last, a good portable online multiplayer game! (sorry Twisted Metal) I can never regret buying it.

Let's get down and talk about it from the beginning shall we?

When you start, you get the main menu that shows: Instant Action, Campaign, Infrastructure, Ad Hoc, Settings, Extras & Tutorials.

Instant Action gets you in on the game without having to go through any of the briefings and stuff. Campaign speaks for itself, the one player mode (more about this later). Infrastructure gets you online and play up to 16 players via the PSP's WiFi (more about this later as well). Ad Hoc gets you connected up to 16 of your friends (or whoever) and play it offline via WiFi. Settings ... well that speaks for itself really. Extras gives you information about weapons, unlockable characters, movie intros etc. And Tutorials helps you learn the basics of the game such as the controls.

The Campaign is fun and plays well on the PSP for a 3rd person shooter. This is where you learn to get used to the controls. It takes awhile - but I don't have much to say about the controls coz once you get used to them, you'll be fraggin opponents in no time. The campaign takes you in on the story missions - you are given a briefing as usual, select your weapons, and then you deploy. Maps are great and surprisingly huge for the PSP - although strategy is limited due to the hardware's limitations. You are thrown in with a partner and you get to control your partner's action such as, breahing a door, clearing an area and killing a target. You also get to do various missions but most of them are get to point A and point B and complete your objectives. But this isn't the main part of why I love this game so much. This is only where you can train yourself and get ready for the...

Infrastructure online multiplayer. Fraggin everyone world wide! And guess what? This game has voice chat! Oh yeah... you can trash talk all you want but the main thing is for you to use it to plan strategies with your team mates.

Anyway, when you select Infrastructure the game will take you to the connection screen, connect to any available network, register your username, accept the agreements, view the lobby area, join a briefing, and then pick your game. It is that simple. Well, okay - that only happens on your first time through. Once you've registered, it's only a matter of loggin in, accept agreements and join a briefing. Then you'll be playing online in no time.

You have tons of options as well to the objectives of the game. I haven't gone through it all coz I havent tried creating my own game but you don't need to know that. All you need to know is that this game is worth playing online.

Cool thing about the dashboard of SOCOM is you've got other stuff to do than just joining a game. You can check out forum boards, news, view your profile, view other people's profile, search for a player, view the leaderboard etc. It's all fun stuff.

Now get your ass a SOCOM, go online and let me know of your existence. Look for SinAdam! May the best wins.

Doom, The Movie

DOOM (the movie) is a good example of how you should ignore the critics and just go watch the damn movie yourself. I have encountered a lot of bad reviews but that did not stop me from going to the cinema, buying the ticket, and enjoying the movie. Yes, I enjoyed it pretty much.

The movie did start a bit slow though - most of the time, it was full of useless suspence-turned-comedy. But - nothing happens in the beginning - well nothing much. The best part of the movie comes in the middle towards the end.

Character-wise, Sarge (The Rock) could've been made better. He lacks character in most parts of the movie. It wasn't until towards the ending that you get to know him pretty well.

The plot is a bit disappointing - but I'll leave that part in the Movie&Game comparison below. That's about it as a movie I'd like to mention.

When comparing it to the game, by the game I mean Doom 3, this movie is a bit of a disappointment to me. Weapons from a chainsaw to the BFG can be seen but most you don't see in action. The plot is different. And I mean different. Human experiment gone wrong story is substituted to the original demons on Mars. Which means, you don't get to see the final boss of Doom3 here. And speaking of the demons, they included a lot of the Doom demons in the movie. Too bad though that most of them you only get to see in this 6-9 minutes of the FPS scene.

The FPS scene? Awesome! When normally, I would feel dizzy looking at people playing an FPS game when I'm not the one controlling - here, I just feel right at home.

One more thing though, the part that disappointed me the most - is how the movie lack the scary factor of Doom 3. The dark corners are just... dark corners. The atmostphere is just too sci-fi and boring. That feeling I felt about dark areas from the game just wasn't there at all. I was hoping that this would be scary - but it turned out to be just a good action movie. That's all.

Still, as a movie, Doom is worth the watch.

Anything can happen in 4 months...

Judging from the months of hiatus by our lovable SIN, it seems that there is less to talk about in the games department. I, on the other hand, have become slightly more insane with the passing months I was on leave. I might even be leaving for a bit if anyone cares...

But now things are different. With the PSP launch out of the way and the fact that everyone, present company inclused, has been MIA from the onslaught of sweet games out and about, it is no surprise that we took a bit of our own selfish time to ourselves, dedicated to gamming bliss.

Metal Gear: Ac!d on the PSP is one helluva awesome game. It plays like your regular card-based RPG and expands itself in the MGS universe. The story's quite nice, throwing you off the loop more often than not and the issues with most MGS veteran may have a problem about with this new style of gameplay will silenced once they can grasp the fact that this is a wonderful game. I can't stress enough that this game is more Metal Gear than, oh say, Final Fantasy Tactics. You have to play this to believe it.

Mario 64 on the DS however good that game was on the N64, which still is, almoost decapitated my hands for its flimsy toouchy controls using the touch screens... makes you wonder whether Nintendo made a mistake not including the analog controller in the first place... regardless, this is a classic game worth playing. With a slew of added stuff inside, who wouldn't be having fun?

DOOM 3 scared the S**T out of me. Please no more screams from the dark.....

Halo Party - Best Ever!

I spent a good deal of the beginning of this week and last planning for lastnight that I ended up forgetting yesterday was my birthday. Gaming life sure is taking over mine. Not that I mind that much anyway. But, lastnight came with another successful Halo Party! Cept this time, we had 3xboxes played on 3separate TVs!

Initially, we were supposed to have like 4xboxes, bt one of the guys who was supposed to bring his xbox cudn't make it - bt 3xboxes, 12players per game, all in one room was crazy enough! A lot of people came, and definitely more than 12 people. I even managed to make this one guy, who usually watches us play, to play Halo! We had enough for 16, heck we had more people than that - but only 12 were allowed. So people who wanted to play had to switch. Still, we had no problems with that.

The best part of that night was playing a 12player Team Slayer match on Coagulation - watchin at 10 Spartans and Covenants on the wide open field fragging each other was a sight to see. if only we had 16players... it wud've been bliss.

The party started at about 5.30pm, after putting a lot of thought into setting up the room to a strategic setting. After all that was done, all hell broke lose. The wrath of Halo on 3 connected consoles was felt for the first time in my living room. The game continued on, non-stop, only to increase the number of players until the max - then my parents called everyone for dinner - a mini birthday party for me - which made it kind of an official birthday part. But I didnt mind. Then, after dinner - chaos came upon the living room again! Things kept going, some people went home, but we still had enough players. 5am, I felt tired. The host had to retire. Woke up at 12, only to find that they were still playing Halo! 2pm, some started to leave. 4pm, the party officially ended - breaking the running time of our last Halo Party. The longest Halo Party ever, 23hours running straight. How crazy was that?

Merceneries...

I played Merceneries on the Xbox and - well so far it's not too bad. I stopped playing it though coz of ugly explosion effects. That needs work. Plus, the whole game environment looks almost ... robotic? I don't know. I wasn't impressed.

But character animations are great. The cool thing about this game is the GTA-like gameplay. So definitely, this game is a must try if you can pass by the graphic effects.

Bored in Singapore...

I'm in Singapore, hanging out at the hotel private lounge - they call it the Royal Club. Everyone's out, shopping, and im tired of shopping. Now im just sitting here with the free internet, free food and free drinks... now what should i do? I'm waiting to get a PSP soon - bt my uncle told me not to buy it just yet coz his Jap friends are coming over and they might bring one for me! So hopefully it'll be here. I'll only buy it here if the japs don't have enough for me.

Cool! Supamofo is online!!

Stranger on Xbox

I've never really played any of the oddworld games before Stranger's Wrath bt I can say this for sure, this fourth (am i right?) game from the oddworld universe is pretty damn fun and frustrating at the same time.

The world as you play through it is very fun to stay in. You play along at the same time looking around at the fantastic graphics and level designs. Every animation from the grass swaying to the live animals jumping around is smooth. That much is great and good enough to drool on. The gameplay is fun when you know how to. You just have to learn how to use the live ammo. Yes! LIVE ammo - u hunt for animals around you and use them as ammo. Pretty damn fun - squirrels are annoying btw.

But there are a number of things about this game I dont like - like how the game feels kind of repetitive at first - get mission, do it, come back for money kinda thing. Bt that is soon turned around in the later levels. Then there's the difficulty settings. The game doesn't feel so smooth in terms of this. Some times, it can be really easy, then all of a sudden, just as you are having fun blasting everything around you, it gets so damn hard that you die again and again - till you stop and think really hard for a strategy. Oh... and the main character, called Stranger, he's not that very friendly to you. You press one button, that's all you get for his interaction with other characters.... oh plus, character designs are limited - almost everybody looks the same...

but, this is one game you you cannot miss! Aside from its problems, I love this game to bits!
